Chelsea

Welcome to Chelsea

The top floor of New York neighborhoods, Chelsea is contemporary, hip, and unforgettable
Named by retired British Major Thomas Clarke, Chelsea’s roots go back to the 1750s. This location and its rich history have been a major part of American history. Whether it’s the neighborhood’s place in the Industrial Revolution or major contributions to the world of theater, Chelsea has done a lot for popular culture.

Chelsea today houses more than 45,000 residents. It’s these residents that have helped the city steer its direction and embrace its creative pursuits. Artistically minded, this neighborhood never strays from following its heart. It’s why today’s Chelsea is seen as an institution among creatives and a true piece of new-age Americana.

Local Lifestyle

Chelsea is known as one of the most welcoming and gorgeous neighborhoods in Manhattan. Mixing the nightlife of Manhattan with upscale shopping, the sporting complex of Chelsea Piers, and charming numerous rooftop bars, Chelsea has an eclectic style all its own.

It’s the people who make up this specialized version of New York living. From nights at the theater just a tad north to upscale dining, Chelsea knows how to bring people in with both stunning sights and gleaming splendor. Together, it makes for one of the most uniquely New York experiences one can find.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

For food, few establishments give you a taste of Chelsea like Cookshop. This perennial hot spot in the heart of Chelsea offers American food with a green market feel. Much like Shukette, which delivers Middle Eastern food that leaves diners raving, and Cucina Alba with its beautiful ambiance, the options in Chelsea are as immense as the flavors.

Locations like the Sullivan Street Bakery and Pizza take you old-school with classic New York baked goods. Alongside classics like The Empire Diner and the authentic Spanish cuisine of Tia Pol, it shows that Chelsea can embrace its history while looking into the future.

For shopping, Chelsea has seen itself become a big player in the retail game. As shoppers flock to their stores, it only helps the community grow. The area as a whole has only benefited from the attention that Chelsea has received and pushed its boundaries towards Hudson Yards.

Things to Do

The High Line in Chelsea is legendary. This public park was built on a historic freight line and is elevated high above Manhattan’s West Side. Opened in 2009, this experience combines nature and art with a memorable mental image to last a lifetime. Much like the breathtaking Edge observation deck, this is a destination that should be on any agenda.

Attractions like this and the famed Chelsea Waterside Park, which features a basketball court and children’s play area, show that this piece of NYC offers so much more than glitzy nightlife. The Chelsea Piers is a great reminder of that, as is 14th Street Park.

There’s plenty to do in Chelsea, from enjoying the art at one of the many galleries like Hauser & Wirth to perusing the wares at Chelsea Market. In the shadow of the restored historic Nabisco factory is a piece of history, as this market has been a big part of New York since the 1890s. It gives people a chance to shop, socialize, and sample a variety of foods in diverse restaurants. The city is beautiful this time of year. What time of year? Every time of year.

Schools

With a higher rate of college-educated residents than the rest of New York City, Chelsea holds education in high regard. The city boasts some exceptional schools.
