Sunnyside is a very popular neighborhood with Brooklyn transplants these days. It’s more affordable than Brooklyn…. for now. As a neighborhood goes, its proximity to Brooklyn and Manhattan make it great for bikers and its restaurants are excellent. Sunnyside was once considered part of Long Island City and much of its pre-war architecture appeared between 1910 -1920, after the opening of the Queensboro Bridge and the construction of the 7 line.
Sunnyside is divided into two areas south of Queens Boulevard, which includes a little neighborhood called Blissville and north of Queens Boulevard which comprises the highly coveted Sunnyside Gardens. Many people have strong opinions about what side of Queens Boulevard they want to live on! If you are lucky enough to score a pad on certain blocks of Sunnyside on the north side of the Boulevard, you can get a membership to Sunnyside Gardens Park, which has tennis courts and an active community who plans all kinds of fun events in the summer months.
Sunnyside Gardens was created in the 1920s as a working class housing, but nowadays these little homes are very coveted and sell for well over $1 million or more, often with many offers. Tiny rowhouses were built around a full block with a common garden, called Mews, behind the buildings. While the houses themselves are small, they are big on charm!
In other parts of the neighborhood are classic mult-istory apartment buildings and semi-detached rowhouses. Keep an eye out for the Art Deco!
Get to Midtown in twenty minutes on the 7 train, or ride your bike across the Queensboro Bridge!
